The Real Club Náutico de Tenerife has kicked off the 32nd Trofeo Infantas de España, with 15 boats and around 120 sailors competing off the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife this weekend.
The ORC Cruiser fleet moved out towards the waters off Las Teresitas beach after Friday’s checks and preparations, with racing scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, 27 September.
The first starts are planned for 11am on both days, with four races scheduled across the weekend.
Keeping an eye on the weather
As ever with sailing, the timetable is somewhat dependent on what the Atlantic decides to do.
The race committee will assess the conditions each day and decide when the fleet can safely get underway.
Once the racing is finished on Sunday, the RCNT’s Main Hall will host the prize-giving ceremony at 5pm.
The Trofeo Infantas de España is one of the established events on the Canary Islands sailing calendar, with support from a long list of sporting, public and private organisations.
Among them are the Government of the Canary Islands, Cabildo de Tenerife, Tourism of Tenerife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, the Port Authority, the Spanish Olympic Committee and the Spanish Sailing Federation, alongside the Navy, Maritime Captaincy and other maritime organisations.
The event is also supported by sponsors including Fundación DISA, Cajasiete, Fred. Olsen Express, Loro Parque, Siam Park, Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Libby’s, among others.
So, if you’re around Santa Cruz this weekend, there should be plenty happening just offshore. Assuming, of course, the wind has read the programme.
