Bajamar beach in La Laguna is safe for swimming again after a temporary bathing ban was lifted following a significant improvement in water quality.
The decision came after the latest water tests showed enterococcus levels had fallen to 19 colony-forming units per 100 millilitres.
That is a dramatic drop from the previous sample, which recorded levels of more than 800 CFU per 100 millilitres and led authorities to close the beach to swimmers as a precaution.
Swimming ban lifted after latest tests
The Tenerife Health Area Directorate confirmed the improved results in an inspection report issued on Thursday, 27 August.
Enterococci are one of the microbiological indicators used to assess the quality of bathing water. When levels rise above the permitted limits, restrictions can be introduced while further tests are carried out.
With the latest sample showing just 19 CFU per 100 millilitres, the water has now been declared suitable for bathing and the temporary ban has been lifted.
What caused the high readings?
The earlier sample, taken on 24 August, showed unusually high levels of enterococci.
However, the inspection report does not identify the source of the contamination and does not confirm whether it was linked to a sewage discharge or another cause.
For now, the important bit for swimmers is that the latest tests show the water quality has returned to an acceptable level.
So, after a few days of being off limits, Bajamar is once again open for residents and visitors who fancy a swim.
And given how quickly things can heat up in Tenerife in late August, that will probably come as welcome news to quite a few people.
