If you live in Tenerife long enough, you soon realise there is always a fiesta happening somewhere.
This week is no exception. From Bajamar and Tejina to Guamasa, Valle Jiménez and the neighbourhoods around La Laguna, the end of August is packed with processions, music, children’s activities, galas, fireworks and the sort of community events that remind you this island does not need much of an excuse to put up a stage and start celebrating.
Here’s what’s happening between Monday 24th and Friday 28th August.
Fiestas del Coromoto
The Fiestas del Coromoto get underway on Wednesday 26th August.
The opening speech starts at 6.30pm, followed by a parade at 7.30pm and a concert by Ledes Díaz at 8.30pm.
The celebrations continue the following day with more activities, including a performance by the local group Parranda Ixemad.
Valle Jiménez
Valle Jiménez begins its programme on Monday 24th August with a conference at 7pm.
More talks and community events follow during the week, before the musical event Nuestras Raíces takes place on Friday 28th August at 8.30pm.
Fiestas de las Chumberas
The Chumberas festivities begin on Thursday 27th August with the opening speech at 7pm.
The following evening, Friday 28th, there will be an adult gala starting at 9pm.
Barrio de la Candelaria
The Barrio de la Candelaria has activities running throughout the week.
Things begin on Monday with children’s activities from 6pm, while Friday night rounds things off with a DJ session starting at 11pm.
A fairly standard Tenerife fiesta schedule, really. Something for the children early on, then progressively louder entertainment as the evening goes on.
Santa Rosa de Lima and San Bartolomé de Geneto
Both the Santa Rosa de Lima celebrations in Camino Tornero and the San Bartolomé festivities in Geneto have events and activities taking place throughout the week.
Expect the usual mixture of local competitions, community gatherings and entertainment.
Bajamar Celebrates the Gran Poder de Dios
Bajamar is also in full fiesta mode with the Fiestas del Gran Poder de Dios.
Monday 24th August includes a children’s day starting at 11am, with music, parades and other activities continuing through the week.
San Roque La Laguna
The San Roque celebrations include community activities and traditional events on Monday 24th August.
The day finishes with the burning of the haragán, followed by the presentation of awards later in the evening.
Guamasa Santa Rosa de Lima
Guamasa has a family film night planned for Monday 24th August.
Later in the week, on Thursday 27th August, there will be a talent gala.
Los Baldíos
Los Baldíos gets its celebrations underway on Friday 28th August with an opening speech at 8pm.
Tejina and the San Bartolomé Celebrations
Tejina is also celebrating San Bartolomé with a busy programme of events throughout the week.
There will be traditional fireworks, music, festivities and performances as the celebrations continue.
A Busy Week for La Laguna
One of the things I like about Tenerife is that these aren’t massive commercial events designed by a marketing department somewhere.
Most of these fiestas are local. They’re about neighbourhoods, families, traditions and communities getting together.
And, inevitably, there will probably be a bar serving cold beer, a stage with music playing slightly louder than necessary and somebody insisting you stay for “just one more”.
