There aren’t many better places to spend a summer morning than Las Teresitas Beach, especially when it’s filled with music, laughter and three generations enjoying the day together.
That’s exactly what happened in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where dozens of grandparents, children and grandchildren came together to celebrate Grandparents’ Day with a fun-packed programme of beach activities designed to promote active ageing and family connections.
A Morning Full of Energy
The event formed part of the Santa Cruz Vital programme, an initiative that encourages older residents to stay active, social and engaged throughout the year.
Participants enjoyed a variety of activities, including:
- Aquagym sessions
- Petanque
- Dance classes
- Family games on the beach
Classic songs such as La Macarena and Noches de Fantasía had everyone dancing, with many grandchildren joining their grandparents on the sand.
Bringing Generations Together
Around 50 older residents took part in the event, many accompanied by their families, creating a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere by the sea.
Organisers say the aim is not only to encourage physical activity but also to help combat loneliness by creating opportunities for people to socialise and build lasting friendships.
For many participants, the programme has become an important part of everyday life.
Several grandparents spoke about the friendships they have made through Santa Cruz Vital, while others described the activities as helping them regain confidence, stay independent and enjoy life after difficult personal experiences.
More Than Just a Day at the Beach
The Santa Cruz Vital programme currently operates 42 groups across the city’s five districts, welcoming new members every month.
Alongside its recreational activities, the initiative also helps identify older residents who may need additional support, ensuring they remain connected to community services when required.
Celebrating the Role of Grandparents
The day served as a reminder of the important role grandparents continue to play in family life.
Whether dancing on the sand, exercising in the sea or simply spending time with younger generations, the event celebrated the contribution they make to families and the wider community.
With smiles all round and plenty of enthusiasm for next year’s celebrations, it was another successful day for one of Santa Cruz’s most valued community programmes.
