There aren’t many footballers who can say they’ve become global stars without losing touch with where they came from.
Pedri is one of them.
The Tegueste Town Hall has announced plans to award the FC Barcelona and Spain midfielder the title of Favourite Son of the Town (Hijo Predilecto de la Villa), the highest civic honour the municipality can bestow.
The recognition celebrates not only his achievements on the pitch but also the close connection he has maintained with his hometown throughout his career.
A Career That Has Put Tegueste on the Map
Still only in the early stages of his career, Pedri has already established himself as one of the world’s leading midfielders.
His performances for FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team have earned admiration across the footballing world, while his success has also brought international attention to the small Tenerife town where he grew up.
For Tegueste, the award recognises both his sporting achievements and the way he continues to represent the municipality with humility.
More Than Football
Mayor Norberto Padilla said Pedri embodies the values the town wants to celebrate.
While his footballing ability has made him famous, the mayor highlighted his modesty, hard work and loyalty to his roots as the qualities that truly make him deserving of the honour.
Despite his rise to the top of the game, Pedri has remained closely associated with Tegueste and is widely regarded as a role model for young people across Tenerife.
The Town United Behind Its Local Hero
The strength of that connection was on display during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when Tegueste Town Hall organised public screenings of Spain’s matches on a giant screen so residents could come together to support their hometown player.
The events attracted large crowds, underlining just how much pride the community takes in Pedri’s success.
A Well-Deserved Recognition
The proposal will now go before the municipal council for approval before the formal process begins to award the title.
If approved, Pedri will officially become Favourite Son of Tegueste, a fitting tribute to a player who has reached the very highest level of world football while never forgetting the place where it all began.
