Children Can Learn to Sail This Summer in Tenerife

Not every summer activity in Tenerife has to involve a screen, a swimming pool or an ice cream.

This summer, children and families have the chance to get out on the water and learn the basics of sailing thanks to the Escuela Itinerante DXT, a programme organised by the Tenerife Island Council and the Tenerife Sailing Federation.

Taking place in Garachico and Las Teresitas in Santa Cruz, the initiative is designed to introduce more people to sailing while making the sport accessible to young residents across the island.

Sailing courses in Garachico

Running until 28th August, the Garachico programme is aimed at children aged 7 to 15.

Courses take place Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 2.00pm, with groups of up to 20 participants learning the fundamentals of sailing under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Children will have the opportunity to use both single and multi-person sailing boats, helping them build confidence on the water in a safe environment.

The programme has already proved popular, and local authorities are now working with the Tenerife Sailing Federation on plans to establish a permanent Municipal Sailing School in Garachico, allowing lessons to continue throughout the year.

Family sailing sessions at Las Teresitas

If you’d rather make it a family day out, Las Teresitas Beach is also hosting beginner sailing sessions every Friday until 4th September.

The classes run from 10.00am to 1.00pm and are open to families with children aged 7 to 15.

Each group is limited to six people, and at least one adult must take part alongside the children.

The only other requirement is that everyone taking part must be able to swim.

An affordable way to try something new

One of the best things about the programme is the price.

Participation costs just €5 per person, making it one of the most affordable organised outdoor activities available in Tenerife this summer.

Whether your child dreams of taking up sailing or you simply fancy trying something different as a family, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy Tenerife from a completely different perspective.
