Puerto de la Cruz Launches €5.3 Million Project to Transform Cine Chimisay into a Multi-Purpose Auditorium

Puerto de la Cruz has taken a major step towards the recovery of one of its most iconic buildings. The Town Hall has officially launched the tender process to restore the historic Cine Chimisay and transform it into a modern multi-purpose municipal auditorium.

The project, valued at €5.3 million, includes both the design phase and construction works, with the aim of creating a versatile venue capable of hosting cultural, educational, institutional and professional events throughout the year.

A New Future for a Historic Building

Located in the heart of the town’s historic centre, Cine Chimisay has long been considered one of Puerto de la Cruz’s most recognisable buildings.

Rather than simply restoring the property, the project seeks to completely redefine its role within the community, creating a modern venue that respects the building’s heritage while meeting contemporary needs.

The future auditorium is expected to accommodate up to 450 people, providing a new space for performances, conferences, exhibitions, educational activities and civic events.

Tender Process Now Open

Companies interested in participating have until 6 July 2026 to submit their proposals.

The overall project has an estimated completion period of 31 months, covering both the preparation of the technical plans and the execution of the works.

The Town Hall has opted for a combined design-and-build contract, allowing the technical planning and construction phases to be coordinated from the outset. Municipal officials believe this approach will be particularly beneficial when working on a historic building with complex structural and architectural requirements.

More Than a Restoration Project

According to the municipality, the vision for Cine Chimisay goes beyond preserving a historic structure.

The new venue is intended to support a year-round cultural programme, including theatre productions, film-related events, educational activities, conferences, congresses and community gatherings.

The project is also expected to strengthen Puerto de la Cruz’s ability to attract professional and business events, helping diversify activity throughout the year.

Designed for Modern Standards

The redevelopment plans include significant upgrades to ensure the building meets modern requirements for public venues.

Proposed improvements include:

• Enhanced accessibility

• Greater energy efficiency

• Modern climate control systems

• Improved acoustics

• Updated stage and technical equipment

These features will allow the venue to accommodate a wide variety of events while providing a comfortable experience for audiences and organisers alike.

Boost for the Historic Centre

Municipal leaders see the recovery of Cine Chimisay as an investment not only in culture, but also in the wider revitalisation of Puerto de la Cruz’s historic centre.

By creating a year-round cultural and events venue, the project is expected to generate additional activity for local businesses, restaurants and shops, while strengthening the town’s position as one of Tenerife’s leading cultural destinations.

The restoration of Cine Chimisay represents a blend of heritage preservation and future development, bringing new life to a landmark building while creating fresh opportunities for residents, visitors and the local economy.
