Corpus Christi 2026 in La Orotava: Final Preparations Underway for the Villa’s Biggest Day

La Orotava is putting the finishing touches to one of the most important and spectacular days in its calendar as the town prepares to celebrate the Corpus Christi Infraoctave this Thursday, June 11.

In the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, work is now focused on removing the large protective tent that has sheltered the famous sand tapestry in recent weeks. The unveiling marks the final stage before thousands of visitors gather to admire one of Tenerife’s most iconic cultural and religious traditions.

The master carpet makers responsible for the Plaza’s world-renowned tapestry, led by Domingo González Expósito, will spend tomorrow applying the final details to the extraordinary creation. Crafted entirely from natural volcanic sands from Teide National Park, the artwork is considered unique in the world and remains one of the highlights of the Corpus Christi celebrations in the Canary Islands.

For months, artists, volunteers and local residents have worked behind the scenes to prepare for the event, which transforms the historic streets of La Orotava into a vast open-air gallery of ephemeral art.

As tradition dictates, colourful carpets made from flowers, petals, volcanic sands and natural materials will cover the streets ahead of the Corpus Christi procession, creating one of the most photographed and admired spectacles in Tenerife.

The Corpus Christi celebrations in La Orotava attract visitors from across the Canary Islands and beyond, drawn by a tradition that combines faith, art, community spirit and centuries of history.
