Few players have enjoyed a rise quite like Nico Paz over the past year.
Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the talented midfielder has gone from promising youngster to one of the standout performers in Italian football, earning recognition as one of the biggest revelations of the Serie A season and securing a place in Argentina’s plans for the next World Cup.
From Tenerife to the International Stage
Paz began his football journey in the youth ranks of CD Tenerife before continuing his development at Real Madrid, where he progressed through the club’s academy system.
After moving to Italian side Como, the midfielder enjoyed a remarkable campaign that has attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
His performances have been widely praised for their creativity, confidence and ability to influence games in the final third.
Playing with Freedom
Speaking previously to Radio Club Tenerife, Paz explained his approach to football.
“I’ve always focused on playing well, enjoying myself on the pitch and not simply doing what is expected, but doing what comes naturally,” he said.
“I like making people enjoy themselves.”
That philosophy has become one of the defining features of his game, helping him establish himself as one of the most exciting young midfielders in Europe.
A Dream Realised with Argentina
One of Paz’s biggest ambitions was to represent Argentina alongside his footballing idol, Lionel Messi.
That dream has now become a reality.
His impressive form at Como has earned him a place in Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina squad, confirming that his decision to remain in Italy and continue his development was the right one.
An Outstanding Season
The 2025/26 season proved to be a breakthrough campaign.
Among his achievements:
• Established himself as a key player for Como
• Helped the club secure qualification for European competition
• Recognised as one of the league’s standout midfielders
• Earned a place in Argentina’s national team squad
His performances have also fuelled speculation about a potential return to Real Madrid in the future.
For now, however, Paz remains focused on the present rather than long-term plans.
Tenerife’s Representation on the World Stage
If selected for the World Cup, Paz will become one of three players born in the Canary Islands expected to feature at the tournament.
The others are:
• Pedri González (Spain)
• Yeremy Pino (Spain)
Pedri has already spoken highly of Paz’s development, describing his season as “incredible” and praising the midfielder’s rapid progress.
A Bright Future Ahead
At just 21 years old, Nico Paz has already achieved what many players can only dream of.
From Tenerife’s youth football pitches to Serie A success and an Argentina call-up, his rise has been one of the stories of the season.
And judging by his trajectory, there may be much more still to come.
