Granadilla Promotes Traditional Chasna Dress and Canarian Heritage

Granadilla de Abona continues to highlight the importance of preserving local traditions, this time through a new initiative focused on the island’s traditional clothing and cultural identity.

Led by the Department of Culture and Festivities, the project aims to help residents better understand the traditional dress of the Chasna region, its history and the significance behind each garment.

More Than Just Clothing

Traditional Canarian dress is about far more than what people wear during romerías and festive events.

It represents:

🧵 Cultural heritage
📖 Local history
🤝 Community identity
🏝️ The customs passed down through generations

Understanding how these garments were originally worn helps preserve an important part of Tenerife’s cultural memory.

Learning the Differences

As part of the initiative, a visual guide has been created to explain:

👗 Traditional women’s dress from Chasna
👔 Traditional men’s attire from Chasna
🧶 The different garments and their uses
📚 The distinction between traditional clothing and modern “traje típico”

A difference that often causes confusion, especially during festival season.

Keeping Traditions Alive

The initiative encourages people not only to wear traditional clothing, but also to understand its origins and meaning.

Because traditions don’t survive simply by appearing once a year at a romería.

They survive when people learn about them, share them and pass them on to future generations.
