La Laguna Celebrates Africa Day with Music, Food, Cinema and Culture | 24 to 27 May

La Laguna will mark Africa Day 2026 with four days of cultural activities bringing together music, dance, cinema, gastronomy and community events.

Under the programme “La Laguna, Conexión África”, activities will take place between 24 and 27 May, mainly in Punta del Hidalgo and Multicines Tenerife (Alcampo).

The event aims to showcase the diversity and cultural richness of the African continent through food, music, fashion, literature and artistic expression.

Main Day in Punta del Hidalgo | 24 May

The main celebration takes place on:

🕛 From midday until 9:00pm

Activities planned throughout the day include:

Gastronomy and Culture

• Senegalese food tastings by Saloum Tenerife
• African fashion and textile displays by Gueum sa Bopp
• Traditional clothing catwalk featuring African residents living in Tenerife
• African literature and books presented by Baile del Sol
• Craft stalls, artists and NGOs linked to African projects

There will also be traditional hair braiding workshops by Braiding House.

Activities for Families and Children

Children will be invited to create drawings showing their own vision of Africa, with artwork intended for a future publication.

The programme also includes:

• Dance workshop with choreographer Madaleine Preira
• Demonstration of Laamb, Senegal’s traditional wrestling sport, often compared with Canarian wrestling
• Percussion performances and dance displays

Live Music and International Artists

Live performances will include:

The Conqueror Project with reggae and dub fusion sounds
Cheick Abdou, presenting traditional West African instruments
Sidy Samb, arriving from Dakar with his afroflamenco performance and music influenced by his griot heritage

The evening closes with Afrobeat DJs:

African Film Series | 25 to 27 May

After Punta del Hidalgo, the programme moves to:

Films include:

Rafiki (Kenya)
Neptune Frost (Rwanda / USA)
African Family Dinner (Norway / Sudan / Somalia)
Les Voyageurs (Cameroon)

The screenings will also include discussion spaces and cultural dialogue.

Building Connections Between Tenerife and Africa

The event highlights the close relationship between the Canary Islands and Africa, not only geographically but culturally and socially.

Organisers say the aim is not simply to explain Africa…

But to share its stories, music, food and traditions while breaking stereotypes and building connections.
