Santa Cruz-Ofra Sports Complex Gets a €193,000 Upgrade… Tennis and Padel Courts Back in Action

Trying to keep sports facilities in good shape here in Tenerife is a bit like maintaining a car that’s permanently parked by the sea. The sun, the use, the odd bit of neglect… eventually things need fixing.

That’s exactly what’s just happened at the Santa Cruz-Ofra Sports Complex.

The Cabildo de Tenerife has finished refurbishing the four tennis courts at the complex, along with a major overhaul of the seven padel courts. Altogether the work came to just over €193,000, which, in government project terms, is actually fairly reasonable.

Tennis courts refreshed

The tennis courts have had the basics done properly.

The old surfaces were repaired and renewed, and a new perimeter fence has been installed. They’ve also added similar fencing around the pickleball court, which shows just how quickly that sport has started creeping onto the island.

Nothing flashy. Just the kind of upgrades that stop a facility slowly falling apart.

Padel courts nearly finished

Padel players have also been looked after.

The work covered around 1,400 square metres and included removing old materials, building a new porous base, and installing a new sports surface carpet designed specifically for padel.

At the moment five of the seven courts are already back in use, with the last two still being finished.

They’ve also modified the fencing so that new side entrances can be added to the courts, which should make things a bit easier when players are coming and going.

A busy sports complex

The Santa Cruz-Ofra complex is a pretty sizeable facility, covering around 14,000 square metres, and it’s used by more than 600 people every month.

It’s not just racket sports either.

The centre offers things like:

  • Tennis, padel and pickleball
  • Athletics and outdoor training
  • Cardio and fitness rooms
  • A 25-metre indoor swimming pool
  • A hydrotherapy pool
  • Over 220 guided classes every week
  • Courses for swimming, tennis, padel and even oriental dance

They’ve also added a digital training and nutrition app, which users can access alongside the facilities.

One small but very practical bonus… free parking with no time limit, which in Santa Cruz is worth its weight in gold.

Sports facilities tend to get ignored until they’re falling apart, so it’s actually good to see some money being spent on maintaining them.

And with padel still booming across Tenerife, those courts will probably be fully booked again before the paint’s even dry.
