New housing plans for Granadilla

Housing in Tenerife isn’t exactly cheap right now.

So any time public housing gets mentioned, it’s important to see what happens.

The Cabildo de Tenerife, through its municipal cooperation and housing department, has signed a specific agreement with the Canary Islands Housing Institute to build 47 public housing properties in San Isidro, Granadilla de Abona.

That’s the area between Los Tableritos, Los Setos, Obispo Pérez Cáceres and Peatonal Padre Esteban, for those who know the zone.

This isn’t a standalone idea either. It forms part of a wider framework agreement between the Cabildo and the Canary Islands Government to deliver seven public housing developments across seven municipalities in Tenerife.

Total budget across the island? €45 million.

The Granadilla project alone comes in at just under €9.7 million.

Of that:

• The Cabildo is contributing just over €4.1 million

• ICAVI is putting in around €5.5 million

It’s not small money.

Lope Afonso, the island’s vice president, has highlighted what he calls the Cabildo’s “active role” in tackling the housing crisis this term, positioning it as part of the solution to access problems on the island.

And let’s be honest, access to housing is one of the biggest pressure points in Tenerife, if not all of the islands, right now.

Between rising prices, limited stock and the constant debate around holiday rentals, finding somewhere affordable isn’t straightforward, especially for younger residents and working families.

Forty-seven homes won’t fix the entire problem, but it’s a start.

The real question, as always, is how quickly these projects move from signed agreements and press releases to bricks, mortar and keys in hands.

If they’re delivered efficiently, San Isidro could see some much-needed relief.

We’ll watch this one with interest.
